Exterior door handle not working.
Look for the set screw on neck of the knob between the handle and door.
Close the door and test the door handle again.
Many door knob and lockset problems can be corrected before they become so serious that the lockset does not work at all.
4 close the door and try just the external handle.
You will need to address that connection.
See if this retracts the handle.

After the house settles the door has been used thousands of times or the hinges are just giving out the door knob latch can begin to have problems.
3 while opening the door with the internal handle pull out the external handle and the working parts should latch on.
Check the new door handle to see if it is working without closing the door.
Take the handles knobs off of the door.
This can be in the form of the door not closing the door knob not working or the lock not engaging the strike plate.
If the latch retracts then the handles are not secured to the thru spindle properly.
Improperly functioning new door handles have either been installed incorrectly are not the proper fit for your needs or point to the fact that the door handle was not the issue.
Hopefully this is a long term fix.

If the bolt moves but not enough to allow the door to open the mechanism probably needs lubrication.
Often a malfunctioning latch assembly or lock mechanism causes the problem.
Use a tool a flathead screwdriver will work to twist within the gap the thru spindle inserts into.
